(Source: PascalBeckmann)Firstly, hard rock (or heavy rock) is often defined as existing in the period between 1968 and 1976, whereas heavy metal, which eventually gave rise to metal, tends to be defined in terms of looks and themes related to horror and often Satanism.Hard rock uses distorted guitar and bass as well as synthesisers.  It can also refer to an umbrella term which includes styles of rock like grunge, punk rock, heavy metal, and alternative.  This is why it can be tricky to define.Hard rock evolved from rock ‘n’ roll and the blues, but it was much more aggressive than these styles. In hard rock, the drums don’t te nd to have as many flourishes. There tends to be a simple and effective beat which helps accentuate the guitar riffs and the raspy singing.Metal evolved from hard rock. It first appeared towards the end of the 1970s and early 1980s. The lyrics were darker and the aggression from hard rock was still there.There were drum breaks and fills, too. The drums are struck forcefully whereas the hi-hat is used lightly. (Source: terimakasih0)If you love metal and want to play the drums along to your favourite songs, you should consider learning a basic binary rhythm.  Ternary rhythms are more commonly used in jazz music so you won’t really need them.Learn about other drum techniques.Working on a Binary RhythmThe typical “dum-tsh” is the kind of rhythm we’re thinking of here.In both rock and metal, measures have four beats. As it’s a binary rhythm, you’ll count “1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and...”When you first learn to play the drums, you’ll learn about these three parts of your kit:The hi-hatThe snareThe bass drumRegularly hit the hi-hat on both the beats (the numbers) and the offbeats (the “ands”).Your typical dum-tsh beat looks like this.1: Hi -hat and bass drum“And”: Hi-hat2: Hi-hat and bass drum“And”: Hi-hat3: Hi-hat and bass drum“And”: Hi-hat4: Hi-hat and bass drum“And”: Hi-hat.Start by just practising with your right hand on the hi-hat.  For rock beats, you’ll want your hi-hat to be closed. You can do this by pressing your left foot down on the pedal. This will give you a dry and clean sound.For metal beats, you can slightly open the hi-hat by lifting your foot. This will give you a more energetic and metal sound from the cymbals.You can add the bass drum to beats 1 and 3 by pressing the bass drum pedal down with your right foot.  Finally, you can add the snare on beats 2 and 4 by hitting it with your right hand.  Your arms should be crossed with your right arm over your left.Powerful HitsWhen playing drums along to metal music, you have to hit the drums hard.  You need to be able to feel the aggression when you hit the snare and the bass drum, even in a simple rock beat.  Don’t hold back!Your righ t foot needs to be precise. It’s better to use the ball of your foot to strike the bass pedal. You can hit it more quickly and strongly.  However, make sure not to lift your foot entirely from the pedal as you’ll waste precious time.Your left hand will be used to hit the snare cleanly and precisely. You need to make sure that you let the drumstick rebound off the skin of the snare drum rather than holding your drumstick rigidly as the latter will give you blisters!Using a Double Bass Pedal in Metal MusicMetalheads will probably be very familiar with the sound of a double pedal on a bass drum. This type of pedal arose to get the sound of a double bass drum without needing two kick drums. (Source: terimakasih0)Don’t forget you can also learn to compose your own music for the drums!Metal Beats without a Double PedalIf you attend a drum schoo l, your teacher mightn’t have a double pedal. That said, you can still learn metal beats without one.Firstly, rest your left foot lightly on the hi-hat pedal so that it’s slightly open. You’ll hit it on both the beats and offbeats.  The snare is still played on the 2nd and 4th beats. This is exactly the same as rock’s typical “dum-tsh” beat.  Things get trickier once we introduce the bass drum.In metal, you’re going to strike the bass drum on each 16th note. It’s going to be pretty quick. It’s advised that you practise at a lower tempo first.  I recommend starting really slowly with each beat before bringing it all together to play the whole measure.Start with just the first beat, then the second. Put the first two beats together, then do the same with the third. Try adding the third beat to the measure. Finally, do the same with the fourth beat. Bit by bit, you’ll get the hang of it.1:1: Hi-hat and bass drum2: Bass drum3: Hi-hat and bass drum4: Rest2:2: Hi-hat a nd snare drum2: Bass drum3: Hi-hat and bass drum4: Bass drum Bass drum3:3: Hi-hat2: Bass drum3: Hi-hat and bass drum4: Rest4:4: Hi-hat, bass drum, and snare drum2: Bass drum“And”: Hi-hat4: RestComplicated, isn’t it?To make the rests easier to deal with, you can always just hit the air.Work on this rhythm with your metronome set to 50bpm before upping it to 75bpm and then 100bpm, etc.  Before you increase the speed:Make sure that you always hit the bass drum with the same force.Make sure that the gaps between beats and offbeats are consistent.Make sure that your bass drum and snare are coordinated.Playing with the Double PedalWhen using a double pedal, you play the bass drum with both feet. This allows you to strike the bass drum more quickly.  A lot of metal drummers have one of these.This could be you! However, the second pedal, which doesn’t have a beater next to it, is positioned nex t to the hi-hat pedal.You need to pay particular attention to how you position the two pedals.  Your thighs need to be parallel to the ground. However, so many people enter new work-life situations and unfortunately get stuck in a rut of simply working for their next paycheck. That does not have to be you. You should always be trying to do better â€" to get ahead and carve out the best life you can. This will require standing out in your new job, but don’t worry! The first step is being aware of how you can do this. Here are some ways to stand out in your new career and to get ahead. Stay Social The networking that you undoubtedly did before landing this job doesn’t stop when you get hired. Building relationships will forever be important in any profession, and it’s your job to put yourself in those situations. Yes, it may change a bit once you find yourself comfortable and secure in a new job, but don’t become too comfortable and secure. Attend events and put yourself into situations in order to meet new people and network. Make your new career routine one that commonly puts you on to the radars of those who can help you advance. Additionally, being social like this will make you look good at work too. Being active online may actually be a way to show your personality to your employers and new professional connections. While it’s also important to maintain a sense of professionalism on your public profiles, it’s also important to show off how you interact with people outside of work. Showing consistency in who you are at work as well as outside of it may prove your worthiness to handle new social situations in a different company position, should you apply for a new job as well. So stay social, ponyboy. Be an Asset Your employers hired you because they are under the impression that you will be good for their company and will do the job well. Prove them right. Be the kind of employee that the company needs â€" they should be better off with you than without you, and never neutral. Do your job well; go the extra mile. And bring your fellow employees up. Without overdoing your enthusiasm, keep in mind that a good attitude is infectious. Besides, motivating other employees may in turn motivate you, and keeping a relationship of gratitude, praise, and constructive criticism open between you and your co-workers may not only increase how much you get done but improve how you do it. Of course, you’ve probably experienced the opposite of an asset employee. Maybe you’ve even been that employee. What some may call a “toxic employee,” you may know as an apathetic or lazy co-worker. These people don’t often stick around, and if they do, they have a tendency to bring those around them down. They will never move up in a company. If you want to excel, then set out to be the opposite. Below, he shares his experience at the University of Toledo: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Justin: The campus at the University of Toledo is semi-urban. Its located in West Toledo, a few miles from the downtown area. The university has a good bus system that takes you around campus and to a few locations in the city of Toledo. There is also an excellent bike trail that runs through the middle of campus and connects to the Toledo parks. Its an amazing trail to run, bike, skate, and walk down in the fall and spring months. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Justin:All professors and teaching assistants hold office hours each week. Its easy to stop by their office during these times to talk to them about the course or anything else going on. You need to make appointments with academic advisers, since they can get busy right before students register for classes. Its good to try to meet with them at the very beginning of each semester to plan out the year. They are more than happy to help you find interesting classes that spark your interest, or to help you find a job or internship. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Justin:The dorms are located throughout the entire campus. This gives each dorm a unique feel based on which academic buildings are closest. Each dorm has a dining service, whether that be a 24/7 dining hall or a stop-and-go shop to get some snacks and drinks. No matter what time of day it is, you can always find a dining hall on campus that is open. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Justin:The University of Toledo is well-known for science, medicine, business, engineering, and law. Anything with a science component, from biology to engineering, is well-supported by the university through scholarships and program support. I chose to study environmental science because the faculty and staff are very knowledgeable and the department is very student-focused. There are also many opportunities to study and research abroad. During the summer following my junior year, I was able to study in Mexico and receive college credit. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Justin:There are hundreds of student organizations on campus that provide good opportunities to make friends and socialize. Each dorm has socials all of the time to help you meet different people in your dorm. All of the academic programs help students get connected, make friends, and socialize with people that share interests. Having friends within your major helps you study for tests, and it makes group projects much more fun when theyre with your friends. Greek life isnt a huge deal on campus. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Justin:The Career Center is helpful if you want to find a job on campus. There are always job openings that are willing to work around your schedule. They can help you find a summer internship, or prepare your application for your first job outside of college. I would recommend getting to know the people in the Career Center because they can help you tremendously. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Justin:Each dorm has study areas, which can get busy quickly. Most people choose to study in the library. There is always room, and the student union is right next to the library. You can head over to the union to take a study break and grab dinner. The library has computer stations, study rooms, tables, and lounges. Describe the surrounding town. Justin:Toledo is a pretty big city. The university is a mile from the mall for shopping and the city offers hundreds of restaurants. Toledo has a great parks system and a renowned art museum. There is usually something happening in the city, from baseball and hockey games to concerts and festivals. Toledo is also within an hour drive of Ann Arbor and Detroit. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Justin:The University of Toledo has roughly 20,000 students. Its a big student body, but its small enough to where you know people everywhere you go. The class sizes are nice. Many of the introductory lectures can be intimidating, with 300 students, but after your first year the class sizes drop down to around 20 students. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Justin:One of the best classes I took was an agroecology course. For this course, the instructor wanted us to get out of the classroom as much as possible. We went on field trips almost every week to different places all across Northwest Ohio. It was definitely the most memorable class I ever took. I learned more in this class because the teacher didnt restrict learning to the actual classroom. Who inspired you in education? As a teenager, I couldn’t have cared less about science. Por isso mesmo, conhecer um pouco melhor quem faz este trabalho pode ajudar a que as pessoas se sintam mais à vontade para experimentar essa forma de aprendizado.  Tal como aconteceu na semana passada, tive uma conversa com um dos professores da LOI English, a Alexa  Whinery.Nascida nos Estados Unidos, Alexa já viveu por todo país. Daí que, dependendo do fuso horário no qual se encontra, ela costume ter alunos de diferentes nacionalidades. No entanto, é comum falar com pessoas que vivem no Brasil, na Rússia, na Argentina e no Equador.Uma coisa que me intrigou na sua biografia que está disponível no site foi o fato de ela conhecer diversos sotaques existentes nos Estados Unidos, que tal como acontece no Brasil, variam consoante a região. Segundo Alexa, não existe nenhum sotaque melhor do que outro, pelo que ela não tenta forçar que os seus alunos falem de determ inada forma. Caso queiram aprimorar o seu discurso para ter um sotaque específico, ela ajuda nesse sentido. Porém, não tenta impingir nenhum tipo de sotaque padrão, já que, como ela própria diz, o Inglês é falado por pessoas de diversas nacionalidades e não existe necessidade de inserir o sotaque em uma norma para que o discurso seja compreensível, basta que a pronúncia esteja correta.Falando em pronúncia, questionei Alexa sobre quais eram as maiores dificuldades dos brasileiros que a procuram. Embora não goste de generalizar, dado que prefere tratar cada caso individualmente, Alexa comentou que a pronúncia é uma das dificuldades mais comuns dos estudantes brasileiros, desde os níveis de iniciação até aos mais avançados. Alexa também citou a construção frásica como uma dificuldade, mas, nesse caso, não é tanto uma questão de nível, tendo mais a ver com o fato de se saber pensar em Inglês.Nesse ponto, de aprender a pensar em Inglês para evitar erros na h ora de falar, Alexa referiu que uma das técnicas que usa é a leitura de diálogos e sinopses de filmes e séries, para facilitar o aprendizado da língua, a obtenção de vocabulário e ajudar a que os estudantes consigam se expressar de forma a que o discurso soe mais natural para os nativos. Segundo ela, essa exposição ao Inglês corrente, que é falado atualmente, é uma das maneiras mais eficazes para um não-nativo aprender a falar de forma mais natural.Além disso, a exposição às questões culturais também funciona como uma ajuda essencial. Tal como acontece no Brasil, existem diferentes formas de expressar o mesmo de acordo com as regiões dos Estados Unidos. Daí que, para Alexa, o conhecimento da cultura seja essencial para uma melhor compreensão do idioma.A conversa fluiu naturalmente e uma das coisas que reparei é que ela não gosta muito de generalizações. Para a Alexa, tratar cada estudante individualmente é sagrado. Por isso, ela pareceu ser uma ótima opà §Ã£o para quem está cansado de ser só mais um nos cursos que faz e sente falta de um trabalho mais personalizado.
